Helium Rod

Hyderabad heat was beating us down mercilessly in ICRISAT, but the enthusiasm in team managed to clinch us all to outdoors letting energy waves dehydrate us to heart… may be our facilitator found it hard at heart or had his plans for indoor games to beat the heat… We were directed in.

306 welcomed us with enough supply for fluid balancing, everyone had their piece and got seated beside respective team directing A/c to chill us down. Listing out enablers and disablers of the previous exercise followed. Facilitator waved his hands guiding us all to the center of the conference room briefing about the Helium Rod exercise… helium rod??? The name kept me guessing and interested me at the same time…

Team was provided with a light weight aluminum rod pretty close to 8Feet in length hollow inside and a simple direction to balance the rod with our index finger --pointing parallel-- to the ground and positioning alternate members opposite to each other… we were to place the rod about the hip high of shortest member of the team and lower it to ground without losing contact by any of the team member… always the rod has to be above our finger, anything other than that was unacceptable…

Team illustrated creativity and positioned ourselves with plan… demo started and we all moved slowly lowering the rod to the ground… our concentration broke with a cry that rod is going up at one end… attempt to correct that never stopped from climbing higher… Blame game followed and no one accepted the mistake… couple of attempts followed but the result was consistent enough, forcing us for an alternative plan… Concentrating at the ends…. Coordinating from the ends…. Plans followed… but the aluminum rod kept on going up… these attempts gave me the clear picture why it is called the Helium Rod…

The real culprit being eagerness, few members taking their eyes off the rod checking how others are performing creating an imbalance… and the attempt to correct the same creating more… one of the alternative was to close our eyes so that we don’t lose our concentration….
